Employees can take up to six months of paid sick leave. For the first 90 days, payment is 75% of salary. For the next 90 days, payment is 85% of salary. Medical certificates must be presented to confirm the illness.
Mothers are entitled to 90 days of paid maternity leave if they have been employed for ten consecutive months. However, they are only entitled to take maternity leave twice during their employment.
There is no paternity leave in Egypt.
Termination processes vary depending on the type of contract, the reason for termination, the employment agreement, and any collective agreements that are in place. Employers wishing to terminate a contract must present their case before a committee at the Ministry of Manpower and Migration. The committee can take up to 15 days to decide on the case, and an employee subsequently dismissed has the right to appeal its decision in a court.
Notice periods are dependent on the length of service. For under ten years of employment, the notice period is two months. For over ten years of employment, the notice period is three months.
There is no requirement for an employer to pay severance pay except in a case of unjustified dismissal.
Probation periods cannot exceed three months under Egyptian law.
