Sick days

Following completion of three months of service, all employees are entitled to up to 90 days' sick leave each year.
The first 15 days are paid at a rate of 100% of salary. The next 30 are at 50% of salary. The remaining 45 days in one year are unpaid. Medical certificates must be provided within 48 hours of the first day off sick.

Maternity leave

Maternity leave allowances vary depending on the employee's length of service. After one year of employment, maternity leave is 45 days at 100% of the employee's regular salary. Before one year has been completed, employees are only eligible to be paid 50% of their salary during maternity leave. Women working under the employment law of the Dubai International Finance Center (DIFC) who have been employed for at least one year are entitled to 65 days of paid maternity leave (33 days at full pay and 32 days at half pay).

There is no provision for paternity leave in the UAE.

Termination

Termination Process

The UAE has a standard termination process that all employers must follow except in cases where they can legally justify dismissal without notice.

Notice Period

Notice periods are a minimum of 30 days by law. The only exception to this is employees working under the employment law of the DIFC, who are only entitled to one weeks' notice during their first five months of employment.

Severance Pay

Mandatory severance pay is determined by length of employment:

  • One to five years – 21 days of wages for each year employed  
  • After five years – 30 days of wages for each additional year.  
  • The maximum payment is capped at two years' worth of salary. Further compensation of three months' pay can be awarded if the reason for dismissal is not recognized by the law of the UAE.
Probation Period

Typical probation periods in the UAE are in the range between three and six months.
