Sick days

All employees can have seven sick days per year.

Maternity leave

The amount of maternity leave depends on the number of children that a mother already has. If she is expecting her first or second child, she is entitled to twelve weeks of maternity leave (two before the birth and ten after). If she is expecting her third child (or any number above that), she is entitled to six weeks of maternity leave (two before the birth and four after).

Paternity leave

There is no legal entitlement to paternity leave in Sri Lanka.

Termination

Termination Process

Terminating an employee's contract for a non-disciplinary reason typically needs the Commissioner of Labor's written approval.

Notice Period

Notice periods are generally set out in employment contracts.

Severance Pay

Employers who have fifteen or more staff are required to pay severance pay to any employees who have completed at least five years' service. The rate of pay is half a month's salary per year of service.

Probation Period

Probationary periods cannot be longer than one year for senior employees or six months for other employees (in some cases the maximum limit on a probationary period is three months).
